Indigenous women in Rangamati to block roads today

Our Correspondent, Rangamati
Sazek Nari Samaj (SNS), a body of indigenous women in Sazek Union under Baghaichhari upazila of the district, will enforce road blockade on Dighinala-Sazek and Baghaichhari-Sazek roads today demanding return of their lands allegedly grabbed by the settlers. Local indigenous people alleged the settlers have constructing houses on their land in Gongaram Mukh areas, triggering a dispute between the indigenous people and the settlers over land ownership. On January 16, people of Ratkaba village in remote Sazek Union under the banner of “Sazek Bhumi Rakkha Committee” gave an ultimatum to Baghaichhari upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) to return their lands allegedly grabbed by the settlers and remove them from the area by January 16, district administration sources said. As the deadline expired without yielding any positive result, the indigenous people of the area announced agitation programme on January 17. They have already started boycotting Shahid Ladu Moni Bazar as part of agitation. Sourendra Nath Chakraborty, deputy commissioner of Rangamati, yesterday said local administration with the public representatives is trying to settle the matter. Superintendent of Police Masud-ul-Hassan said additional police will be deployed in the area to main law and order.
