Rab captures 8 of a kidnappers' gang
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on Wednesday night arrested a gang of eight alleged kidnappers following a gunfight at Kawniar Char in Dewanganj upazila.
The arrestees are Abul Kashem, 45, Mozammel Haq, 36, Tajel, 42, Badshah Alam, 50, Aminul Haque, 45, Hekim Ali, 35, Nurul Haq, 35, and Habibur Rahman, 30.
At a press conference yesterday noon at Jamalpur camp of Rab-12, Company Commander Major Nasiruddin said a team of the elite force from the camp raided the spot on the char at about 8:00pm when the gang members were preparing to commit crime.
“As the law-enforcers reached the area, the criminals opened fire, forcing them to retaliate,” he said.
The Rab members arrested Kashem, Mozammel, Tajel and Badshah from the spot following exchange of several gunshots while others managed to flee, he said.
Later, on the basis of the statement of the arrestees, the force rounded up Aminul, Hekim, Nurul and Habibur from different places.
All the arrested persons hailed from Jamalpur, Kurigram and Sherpur districts.
Nasiruddin said, the gang abducted Suruj, 18, son of Abu Taleb of Iswarganj upazila in Mymensingh district, on January 14 and demanded Tk 10 lakh as ransom from the victim's family.
