Robbers loot houses, attack inmates

Robbers looted at least six houses in three districts on Wednesday and the day before. An armed gang looted cash and valuables including gold from a house at Taragon village under Akhaura upazila of Brahmanbaria on Wednesday, reports our correspondent. According to police and family sources, at around 4:00 am12 to 14 people with cocktails and lethal weapons attacked the main house of Rukon Uddin. The gang looted Tk 20,000 and gold ornaments worth over Tk one lakh. Three houses were looted by robbers in Chuadanga while two pedestrians mugged in Meherpur on Tuesday night, according to our Kushtia correspondent. Chuadanga police said, armed robbers numbering about 15 to16 entered three adjacent houses of Nazrul, Shafiqul and Akter at Bidyadharpur in Jibonnagar upazila at about 1:30am. The house owners are expatriates in Saudi Arabia. The gang held the inmates hostage at gunpoint and looted cash, ornaments and other valuables. In Meherpur, muggers intercepted Neharaul, 36, of Chuadanga at Munshiganj in Gangni upazila of Meherpur when he was returning home from a local bazaar at about 4:30pm and took away Tk 2,000 and mobile. In Jhalakathi, robbers injured three people and looted valuables worth Tk 2.50 lakh from two houses of Mohiskandi and West Cheri villages in Kathalia upazila early Tuesday, reports UNB. Witnesses said, a gang of robbers numbering 12-13 swooped on the house of Jahangir Hossain of Mohiskandi breaking open the door and looted valuables worth Tk 2 lakh at about 1:00am, taking the inmates hostage at gunpoint. In another incident, the same gang entered into the house of Badal Das of nearby West Cheri village at about 3:00am and looted valuables worth Tk 50,000. When the family members raised hue and cry the robber opened fire and stabbed Badal Das, 40, his two sons - Tushar, 16 and Tufan, 14 leaving them critically injured. Our Staff Correspondent in Chittagong adds: Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a raid in Moheskhali of Cox's Bazar on Monday seized two firearms, 35 lethal weapons, 241 blank cartridges and other weapons from a den of robbers. The elite force members also arrested alleged robbers Salahuddin Quder Sujan alias Saka Sujan, 35, son of Fayezul Kader from Puran Bazar Mata Bari area. The seized weapons included two locally made single-barrel guns, 12 machetes, five locally made choppers, one Chinese chopper, one magazine, a part of locally made pipe gun, 12 daggers, 30 sticks, three hammers and 241 blank cartridges. During primary interrogation, the arrestee confessed to his involvement in robbery, extortion and other criminal activities in the area.
