13 robbers jailed in Chittagong, Dinajpur

Thirteen robbers were jailed in Chittagong and Dinajpur on Wednesday. A court in Chittagong sentenced five persons to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) for robbery in the city in 2002. The court of fourth additional metropolitan session judge Inamul Haq also fined each Tk 2,000, in default, to suffer one more year in jail, according to our Staff Correspondent. The convicts are Mahfuzul Haq Rasel, Jasim Uddin, Enamul Hasan Sumon, Md Sharif and Dulal Mia. However, the other accused Mizanur Rahman was acquitted of the charge. All the convicts are absconding. According to the prosecution, the convicted robbers looted goods, cash and 35 tolas of gold ornaments from the house of businessman Md Shahedur Rahman at Halishahar Housing Society in the early hours of November 11, 2002. In another verdict, a court in Dinajpur on Wednesday jailed eight robbers for life and fined each Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer more six months in prison. Judge Md Mizanur Rahman of Dinajpur Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-3 pronounced the verdict in presence of all eight robbers in a crowded courtroom, reports our correspondent. The convicts are Abdur Rashid, son of Bayes Uddin of Rampur village, Abdul Jalil, son of Abbas Ali of Badalgachhi village in Naogaon, Abdul Latif, son of Gazimuddin of village Gobarchop, Anwar Hossain, son of Mozahar Hossain of village Jupshahar, Dulu Miah, son of late Mofiz Uddin of village Adhaipur, Atiqur Rahman son of Amin Hossain and Abu Bakkar alias Mofiz Uddin and Fazlur Rahman, sons of Dinu Sardar of Adhaipur village in Naogaon district. According to the prosecution, a gang blocked Phulbari-Gobindaganj highway with felled trees and looted Tk 1.42 lakh goods and ornaments from the Dinajpur bound passengers on a Keya Paribahan night coach at Bijul village under Birampur upazila of Dinajpur on April 9, 2005. A highway patrol team led by ASI Shahadat Hossain arrested Abdul Jalil from the area while his accomplices managed to flee. Later, police arrested seven others on the basis of the statement of Jalil. ASI Shahadat filed a robbery case with Birampur police station accusing the eight of robbery and chargesheeted them.
