One hundred and seventeen officers' quarters, built for the doctors of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital about four years ago, are lying idle as doctors prefer to stay on their own arrangement. Although the quarters remained idle during the long period, around Tk 20 lakh will be required as maintenance cost for the buildings this year, said sources at the medical college hospital. A number of doctors wishing anonymity told The Daily Star that they can easily rent a good house in Bogra town at a relatively low cost while the government rate for staying at the official quarters is too high. Other sources, however, said most of the doctors have chambers for private practice in Bogra town and they prefer to stay there after their official duties as the medical college hospital is around eight kilometres away. The PWD completed construction of 183 family quarters in 30 multi-storeyed buildings at a cost of Tk 26.30 crore on the medical college hospital campus about four years ago, said Md Joynul Abedin, executive engineer of Public Works Department Bogra division. The 500-bed Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital was built under a special project at a cost of Tk 221 crore during the rule of BNP-led alliance government. Dr AYM Fazley Rashid, deputy director of the hospital, and Prof Md Mahbubul Karim, principal of the medical college, admitted that the modern residential quarters have been lying vacant since the beginning of the college and hospital. The government has to pay a good amount of money as house rent to the officials who are not staying at the government quarters in spite of the arrangement, said sources at district accounts office. On the other hand, third and fourth class employees of the medical college hospital have been facing acute accommodation problem. “We have failed to provide accommodation for third and forth class employees due to shortage of residential units,” said Prof Md Mahbubul Karim.
