Rival groups of Sundarbans fishermen clash: 1 killed
A fisherman was killed and two others were injured in a clash between two rival groups of fishermen at Baro Sheolar Char in Sundarbans on Friday.
The dead is Kalipada Mondol, 42, son of Nabokumar Mondol of Barodal village under Ashashuni upazila of Satkhira district.
The injured fishermen are Md Shahidul Hossain Fakir, 32, son of Shamsur Rahman Fakir of Monipur village under Ashashuni upazila, and Nekbar Gazi, 30, son of Omar Ali Gazi of Harihar Nagar village under Koira upazila of Khulna district.
Kalipada and his co-workers went to Baro Sheolar Char under Sharankhola range of Sundarbans in a trawler owned by Shamsur Rahman Fakir on Friday evening and were fishing there.
When the fishermen of another trawler owned by Nur Islam, Hanif Sheikh, Sohrab Gazi and Shahinur Gazi of Pirojpur district tried to drop fishing net on the same spot, Kalipada and his co-workers obstructed them.
At one stage of altercation, the fishermen of Pirojpur attacked Kalipada and his co-workers with lethal weapons, killing Kalipada on the spot and injuring Shahidul and Nekbar.
Body of fisherman Kalipada brought to Sharankhola in Bagerhat at around 4:30am on Saturday. The injured are undergoing treatment at Jaigirmahal Hospital under Koira upazila of Khulna district.
