Mongla mayor sent to jail on graft charges

A Bagerhat court yesterday sent Mongla municipal mayor and a councillor to jail in two corruption cases. Mayor Mollah Abdul Jalil and Councillor Md Alauddin appeared before the District and Sessions Judge's court in the afternoon and appealed for bail through their lawyer advocate Samarendra Dakua. After a brief hearing, the court rejected the bail prayers and sent the two to jail. Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Bagerhat, filed the cases against the mayor and the councilor. The ACC accused the two of embezzling Tk 2.60 lakh from the municipality fund in the name of buying three motorcycles in 2005. The ACC filed another corruption case against the mayor and the councillor for embezzling Tk 1.25 lakh they withdrew from the municipality fund for repairing garbage trucks.
