398 RU students receive medal, scholarship for academic feat

As many as 398 students of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday received gold medals and scholarships for their outstanding academic performance. The students of 1999 to 2004 sessions received the awards under 10 categories for achieving the highest marks and CGPA at honours and masters levels in their departments. Awards for the next sessions will also be given in phases, said RU Vice Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan. Of yesterday's recipients, 60 students were awarded Agrani Bank gold medal, five students got Dr Momotaz Udding Ahmad gold medal, 294 students were given Rajshahi University scholarship, six got Akbar Hossain scholarship, nine got Nurjahan Nesa scholarship, six got Salahuddin Ahmad Merit Scholarship, six got Sayeda Khatun Merit Scholarship, five got Muhammad Ismail Memorial Scholarship and one student was awarded Miss Rehana Mahtab Scholarship. Eight MBBS students of Rajshahi, Rangpur and Khulna Medical College were also awarded Agrani Bank gold medal and Dr AK Khan gold medal at the ceremony. Vocational and technical education in the country should be given priority to meet the growing technological demands for making digital Bangladesh, Dr Alauddin Ahmed, prime minister's adviser for education, social development and political affairs, said in his speech as the chief guest at the ceremony at the university senate building. Two more residential halls will be established for Rajshahi University, he said. Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and lawmaker from Rajshahi-2 constituency Fazle Hossain Badsha were present at the programme as special guests. RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton called upon the government to establish an agriculture university in Rajshahi. Lawmaker from Rajshahi-1 constituency Omar Faruk Chowdhury, Rajshahi-5 constituency MP Abdul Wadud Dara, Zinatunnesa Talukder MP, RU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Nurullah, Treasurer Prof Abdur Rahman and Registrar Prof Abdul Bari also spoke at the programme presided over by RU Vice Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan. The awards would encourage the next generation students, said RU Vice Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan. At the programme, RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton declared arranging a scholarship in the name of his father AHM Kamruzzaman, Omar Faruk Chowdhury MP said he would arrange it in the name of his father Aizul Haq Chowdhury while Zinatunnesa Talukder MP declared a scholarship in her mother's name for meritorious students of Rajshahi University.
