6 godowns, 20 shops gutted

A devastating fire gutted at least six jute godowns at Raipur village in Sujanagar upazila on Monday night. The origin of fire could not be known till filing of this report. Sources said, at least 1600 maunds of jute were damaged in the godown fire. Being informed, fire fighters from Pabna fire station rushed to the spot and brought fire under control after several hours of hectic effort. The devastating fire damaged goods worth Tk 50 lakh, the godown owners claimed. In Sylhet, at least 20 shops were gutted in a fire at Kupar Bazar in Goainghat upazila early yesterday, reports UNB. Sources said, the fire originated at a shop at about 2:30am and soon raged through the adjoining shops. Reason behind the fire could not be known immediately. The shop owners claimed that the damage caused by the fire could go up to Tk 1 crore. Locals said, fire-fighting units could not reach the remote spot because of inaccessibility. Our Staff Correspondent in Khulna adds: A fire at the state-run Crescent Jute Mill (CJM) at Khalishpur in the city damaged waste product worth Tk 10 lakh. The fire originated from electric short circuit, said the mill's project director Mujibar Rahman Mallick. Five fire fighting units doused the fire in three hours of hectic effort.
