17 acquitted of charges in Khagrachhari
Khagrachhari chief judicial magistrate's court yesterday acquitted all 17 including district Awami League secretary Zahidul Alam of charges of assault on police.
The other accused were Rafiqul Alam, Didarul Alam, Mujibur Rahman, Islam Uddin, Barun Karmakar, Sultan Ahmed, Abdus Sattar, Yusuf Mia, Muslim Uddin, Sattar Mia, Arun Karmakar, Kartik Dey, Monir Ahmed, Tayeb Ali, Sanjit Dhar, Nur Hossain Chowdhury.
Chief judicial magistrate Mohammad Ikhtiarul Islam Mollik pronounced the verdict. Twenty witnesses were cross-examined during the trial.
According to the case, the aforesaid people were sued on charge of attacking on-duty police with deadly weapons and injuring five policemen on March 31, 2001.
The then officer-in-charge of Khagrachhari Sadar police station G M Harun filed a case against the 17 on the same day.
