Nerd Alert!
If you spend time with them, they will instantly remind you of the sitcom—The Big Bang Theory. Along with being ferociously studious, they all share a passion for developing smart phone apps. The most talked about app development group of the generation -- they are the NerdCats.
Swagata Pratik, Mesbah Uddin Khan, Tanbin Islam and Siyam Muzahidul Islam started NerdCats to enter the local Microsoft Imagine Cup, 2013, with their most successful app- Chandrabindu, a Bangla phonetic keyboard for windows smart phones. Though they were the second runners up, their app, Chandrabindu, became really popular amongst smart phone users and app developers. “We mainly concentrate on making the app as user friendly as possible,” says the NerdCats team leader, Swagata Pratik.
The app that took them to the limelight was the bus map for Windows smart phone users. 'Bus Map' is the first smart phone app that provides bus routes/stops for all of Dhaka city. It's one of the most frequently downloaded apps in Bangladesh according to the Windows App store. Till date, they have made 53 apps for Android users and 9 for Windows which include TrainCat, Bdnews24, Star Cineplex, Television Listings Bangladesh, DoinikHartal etc.
NerdCats have 21 developers up and working, at the moment. “We have a very diverse bunch here at NerdCats. All of them are unique in their own ways but we all are one when comes to app development,” says Lamia Mehreen, one of the developers, who is currently working on an app for The Daily Star.
Currently, NerdCats are busy with their upcoming app CityCat which will work as a locator on Windows phones. CityCat will hopefully be available towards the end of March. They are also working on apps like Pipilika news, English to Bengali dictionary, Protidiner Bazar etc.
