Gang of ‘muggers’ impersonating detectives busted; 11 arrested

They formed a group of 11, all "muggers".

Every evening, they used to meet and discuss to decide on their area of mugging. As part of their plan, they used to take position in the area and follow their target.

At one stage, they intercepted their target -- posing as detectives -- and mugged them.

Their series of muggingsfinallyended after police arrested the 11 members of the mugging gang in last couple of days while investigating a case filed with Kotwali Police Station, said Saiful Alam Muzahid, assistant commissioner of (Kotwali Zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

The official said they came to know about the gang during investigation of a mugging incident that happened in Kotwali area on August 17. On that day, the muggers -- impersonating detectives -- mugged Tk 55,000 from a fabric trader.

The arrestees are: Sarwar Hossain, Dulal, Anwar Gulda, Ameer, Nasir Hawlader, Emon alias Kajol Kumar Dey, Iqbal, Sohag Khan, Jakir Hossain, Sumon and Ramzan.

They were arrested from different areas at different time. Of the arrestees, Sohag, Iqbal and Dulal have already given confessional statements before magistrates while the rest were on a four-day remand, said Saiful.

Police recovered a pair of handcuffs and two jackets with inscriptions of detectives from their possession, the police officer said.

They are all accused in cases with different police stations.
