What makes female friendships so strong and enduring
Ramisa and Lily have been friends since class five. They met at football class, where they played on opposite teams and, funnily enough, bonded between missed goals and aggressive passes!
Two decades have passed since those carefree days, and their lives have been through many ups and downs, but their friendship has been the only constant aspect. Through high school, university, job, marriage and a divorce later, they have been each other’s rocks, through thick and thin. They know each other inside out and usually tend to reach for each other in most situations. Their favourite tradition since their girlhood days? Wearing matching clothes as they did as girls and now as grown women because one’s body might be ravaged by age, but it’s the heart that always remains young!
Our lives are a complex amalgamation of relationships. In every phase of it, we come across many people who leave behind traces of themselves in our hearts. And among this ebb and flow, a few individuals withstand this continuous motion. To that end, friendship among women has always been regarded as sacrosanct. Owing to shared experiences, values and differences too, this is a relationship that transcends time, distance and life’s challenges. Due to its anchoring nature that keeps one grounded and connected, female friendships sometimes outlast many other relationships, some more intimate or familial.
It’s a fact well established that we women face challenges of all manners in our daily lives that impact us on a mental level. And we tend to rely on one another by being each other’s sounding boards, free therapists, advisors, fashion experts, and what have you! Author Toni Morrison described female friendship in her popular novel, Beloved, in the most poignant way: a true friend gathers the pieces of us and gives them back to us in the right order. This seemingly simple but complex network of support keeps us afloat amidst the whirlpool of life.
So, savour and celebrate your best woman ladies, for she is precious and hard to find.
