Social media and freedom of expression

Our government is waging a war against people's freedom to access the social media to 'safeguard' us from its 'negative' effects. If the government cares so much about the citizens, why don't they ban cigarettes? Cigarettes cause harm not only to the smokers but also to those around them.

It is one thing to block social media for a day to ensure security but to have it down for weeks is inexplicable and unacceptable. It may seem that the authorities are actually exercising power by shutting down all public discourse, both positive and negative instead of trying to ensure public safety.

Social media is not only for sharing selfies and cat pictures, it is also for mothers who want to see their children studying abroad, small entrepreneurs who sell their products online to get by, and teachers who use it to post study materials for their students.
