Dire situation in Madaya

The situation in the besieged rebel-held Syrian village Madaya is extremely dire. People of that village are surviving on leaves and grass. A kilo of rice now costs more than $100 and people are said to be dying from starvation and extreme malnutrition. Madaya, a town of 40,000 people northwest of the capital Damascus, has been under siege since July, cut off by forces of both the Syrian government and Hezbollah, its Lebanese ally. Madaya is also peppered with landmines, and is thwarting aid efforts.

Immediate UN intervention is needed to mitigate this humanitarian crisis.
