Operation on underdeveloped twin successful
Doctors have had a "successful" operation into separating an underdeveloped twin baby at Dhaka's Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University.
The two-and-half hour operation, telecast on video projection inside the hospital, was complete around 11:30am this morning, hospital officials said.
An 18-member team, under Prof Dr Md Ruhul Amin, chairman of child surgery department, operated on the twin, said Proshanto Kumar Majumder, a public relations official at BSMMU.
"The child will be kept under 48-hour supervision," Proshanto said quoting Dr Amin.
Hiramoni, mother of the twin, expressed satisfaction over the success of the operation and requested all to pray for her child's quick recovery.
On March 7, Hiramoni, wife of Jakaria hailing from Bagerhat, gave birth to the child with a medical condition called congenital parasitic twin.
It is such a physical condition where underdeveloped parts of a body, mostly the lower portion, are attached with a fully developed child.
Authorities at the BSMMU shouldered the costs of the twin baby's treatment.
