Food ministry launches drive against rice hoarders

Star Digital Report

A day after PM's directive at Cabinet meeting, the Food Ministry launched a drive against illegal hoarding of rice.

According to the Food Ministry's Public Relations Office, eight teams will conduct the drive across the country.

Members of the team will investigate whether anyone is causing an artificial crisis by illegally hoarding rice and will work to take legal action against them.

The decision was taken today at a meeting chaired by Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder at his office in Dhaka Secretariat. It was decided to send semi-official letters to the Deputy Commissioners and Upazila Nirbahi Officers, as well as the NSI, Rab, and the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection to prevent illegal stockpiling of rice.

The food minister also directed the officials to hold a joint meeting between the ministries of agriculture, food, and commerce as soon as possible.

The acting secretary to the food ministry, additional secretaries, the DG of Directorate General of Food, and other senior officials attended the meeting.
