Russian worker of Rooppur power plant dies of Covid-19

A Russian worker of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant died of Covid-19 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka yesterday.

Deceased Ivan Karpovan (38) was a worker of Russian construction firm Nikmith-Atmostroy, reports our Pabna correspondent.

"Ivan was infected with Covid-19 last month and was admitted to a hospital at Dhaka's Shyamoli. He was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) on June 19 after his condition deteriorated," said Md Ruhul Kuddus, in-charge of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant's site office.

A total of 231 Russian workers tested Covid-19 positive last month. Of them, 144 were admitted to four hospitals, Dr Fakhrul Islam, a doctor of the power plant, told The Daily Star.

Some officials of Russian government have visited the power plant today to observe the situation.

"Russian workers working in the Rooppur Nuke Plant will get Russian Covid-19 vaccine Sputnik V. The vaccines have already reached the plant site. Around 700 Bangladeshi officials of the plant are likely to get this vaccine too," Dr Shawkat Akbar, project director of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, told the Daily Star today.
