Covid situation getting bleaker

Country sees record 212 deaths in a day; 11,324 new infections detected; 3 die during oxygen
supply disruption in ICU at a Faridpur hospital

The record for the daily death toll from Covid-19 was broken again yesterday with officials reporting 212 deaths across the country.

In the 24 hours preceding 8:00am yesterday, 11,324 new cases were detected. The number of confirmed new cases crossed the 11,000-mark for the fourth straight day.

Confirmed cases in the country crossed the one million mark yesterday. The total death toll as of yesterday was 16,004, which is around 1.6 percent of all confirmed cases. The number of detected cases rose to 10,00,543.

The positivity rate reported yesterday was 30.95 percent of 36,586 tests, according to a press release from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Meanwhile, three Covid-19 patients died at the ICU of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical College Hospital (BSMMCH) in Faridpur when the oxygen supply was inadequate.

They died between 9:00am and 9:20am, reports our Faridpur correspondent, quoting the hospital authorities as saying.

ICU In-charge Ananta Kumar Bishwas said the tragedies happened when oxygen was being transferred from a tanker truck to the oxygen tank.

The oxygen pressure had to be reduced at the time due to technical reasons, he said.

Of the Covid-19 patients reported dead yesterday, 119 were male and 93 female.

At least 160 of them died at public hospitals, 36 at private hospitals and 16 at home, according to the DGHS press release.

Of them, 79 were in Khulna, 53 in Dhaka, 26 in Chattogram, 23 in Rajshahi, 12 in Rangpur, eight in Mymensingh, six in Sylhet and five in Barishal divisions.

Ninety were aged over 60, and 56 between 51 and 60 years.
