Many areas of Rajshahi city submerged following ‘very heavy’ rainfall over 24hrs
Major parts of Rajshahi city were submerged as the city corporation experienced "very heavy" rainfall in 24 hours till noon today.
The areas -- Uposhohor, Lakshmipur, Rajarhata, Sadhur Mor, Shaheb Bazar, Padma Residential Area, and Shalbagan -- of the city were waterlogged till evening today, our staff correspondent reports.
Lakshmipur is the area where Rajshahi Medical College Hospital is located.
Rohidul Islam, a local Met office observer, said they recorded 244.6mm in the 24 hours till noon today while the rainfall recorded in the entire month of September was 254mm.
Rajshahi City Corporation's chief conservancy officer was not available for comment.
According to the Met office, rainfall between 44 mm to 88mm is considered heavy rainfall, and rainfall of 89mm and above is considered very heavy rainfall.
Commuters have been suffering since yesterday since the low areas and streets were waterlogged.
Farmers were the worst hit as their lands went under water in the city suburbs and villages around the city.
Taibur Rahman, a senior journalist, posted a photograph of his family huddled on their bed as water entered their house.
Contacted, Rahman said more than 50 houses of his area were submerged due to the very heavy rainfall.
