Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) has incurred a loss of Tk 1,147.60 crore by selling diesel at a lower price in the last five and a half months after the fuel price had increased in the international market, claimed the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources (MPEMR).

In a press statement today, the ministry's Deputy Chief Information Officer Meer Mohammad Aslam Uddin claimed that they have been selling diesel at a lower price since June 2021.

According to the ministry's statement, BPC incurred a loss of Tk 2.97 per liter in June, and Tk 3.70 in July, Tk 1.58 in August, Tk 5.62 in September, and Tk 13.01 in October for every litre of diesel.

The ministry claims the government will give subsidy for the loss. The BPC has Tk 33,734 crore development projects for ensuring national energy security, it added.

"If BPC went at grant loss, the energy security would be at risk, that's why for national interest, the government decided to re-fix the diesel and kerosene price," reads the statement.

The government also claimed that the re-fixed price of diesel and kerosene is still lower than the neighbouring countries.
