Star Digital Report

About 88 percent of educational institutions in Chattogram's Satkania upazila will remain closed for at least one more week following severe flooding in the region, said education officials.

The schools will open after the cleaning of classrooms and campus, they added.

According to the information provided by the Satkania Upazila Education Office, there are 270 educational institutions in Satkania including 149 primary schools, 82 high schools, 33 madrasas, and six colleges.

Teaching has started in 34 educational institutions, including 20 primary schools, in the municipal area of the upazila, it said.

Golam Mahbub, primary education officer of Satkania, told The Daily Star, "Most of the schools in the area still don't have the environment to conduct educational activities. Cleaning activities began yesterday, and we hope that 80% of the schools will be ready within the next two days and all schools within the next week."

The higher secondary educational institutions in the area were also facing the same situation.

Only 14 higher secondary institutions have opened so far.

Satkania Secondary Education Officer Salim Uddin said that it will take two to seven more days to complete the clean-up job.

Moreover, reopening those institutions, which have suffered damages, may take more time.

Meanwhile, the educational activities in Chattogram city and other upazilas of the district started yesterday, said District Education Officer Uttam Khisa.

He said only Baklia Government High School and one other school in Karnaphuli upazila remained closed due to damages caused by flooding.
