Veteran artiste Jahanara Bhuiyan no more

Veteran film actress Jahanara Bhuiyan passed away last evening after being ill for a long while. She was 68. Her nephew, singer Niloy Ahmed, confirmed the news of her demise at a hospital in Minnesota, USA, to Prothom Alo.

According to family sources, the artiste had been suffering from multiple health complications for years. Due to diabetes, both her kidneys had failed. She had been under treatment at Lake Ridge Care Centre in Minnesota for the past 16 months. Despite undergoing dialysis three times a week, she ultimately could not recover.

Jahanara Bhuiyan, who was active in the 1970s and 1980s, was not only an actress but also a lyricist, director, and producer. She began her career in cinema as a lyricist, writing her first song for "Nimai Sannyasi", a film directed by her husband, freedom fighter and filmmaker Sirajul Islam Bhuiyan. 

In the 1980s, she earned recognition as a character actress with her role in the film "Sot Ma". She went on to act in more than a hundred films and also directed several. Among her directorial works, "Sindur Niona Muche" remains significant. Alongside acting, she made notable contributions as a filmmaker and songwriter.
