Veteran actor Sandhya Shantaram passes away at 87

Sandhya Shantaram, the celebrated actor known for her iconic performances in Hindi and Marathi cinema, died in Mumbai on Saturday, at the age of 87.

After a remarkable career spanning two decades, Sandhya leaves behind a legacy of critically acclaimed films from Indian cinema's golden era. Her most memorable works include "Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje" (1955), "Do Aankhen Barah Haath" (1958), "Navrang" (1959), and the cult Marathi film "Pinjra" (1972) — all directed by her husband, legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram.

Sandhya's cinematic journey began when V. Shantaram discovered the 18-year-old during casting for his 1950 film "Amar Bhoopali". Their professional collaboration blossomed into romance, and the couple married in 1956, remaining together until the filmmaker's death in 1990.

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar paid tribute to the late actor, remembering her extraordinary contribution to cinema. "Saddened by the passing of legendary actress Sandhya Shantaram Ji. Her iconic roles in films like Pinjra, Do Ankhen Barah Hath, Navrang, and Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje will forever be cherished," he wrote on X.

 

"Her remarkable talent and mesmerising dance skills have left an indelible mark on the world of cinema," Bhandarkar added.
