James Bond films set to stream on Netflix in surprise Amazon deal

By Arts & Entertainment Desk

Several James Bond films owned by Amazon MGM Studios are heading to Netflix under an unexpected licensing agreement between the two rival streaming platforms.

Netflix has confirmed that "Die Another Day", "No Time to Die", "Quantum of Solace" and "Skyfall" will begin streaming on the platform from January 15. The titles will be available across multiple regions, including the United States, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, the Benelux countries, Italy, the Nordics and Latin America, for a limited three-month window.

Alongside the Bond films, Netflix will also stream other Amazon-owned titles such as "Rocky", "Creed", "Legally Blonde", and the original series "The Man in the High Castle". The move follows the recent addition of Amazon's conspiracy drama "Hunters", which began streaming on Netflix earlier this month and will remain available for one year in the same territories.

Industry insiders told Deadline that licensing the Bond catalogue to Netflix is a calculated business decision rather than a shift in long-term strategy.

"Licensing the Bond films is a strategic move designed to broaden global reach and re-engage audiences," an Amazon insider said, noting that the revenue upside outweighed concerns about supporting a competing streamer.

Amazon's decision mirrors earlier industry moves, such as Warner Bros Discovery licensing HBO titles like Insecure and Band of Brothers to Netflix in 2023, signalling a renewed openness in the content distribution market.

Chris Ottinger, Head of Worldwide Distribution at Amazon MGM Studios, said the deal aligns with the company's broader licensing approach.

"When Amazon acquired MGM, the plan was to continue licensing its iconic library to streaming and television partners worldwide. Bringing these films to Netflix reflects the enduring global appeal of James Bond and our strong working relationship with Netflix," Ottinger said.

Despite the Netflix deal, Prime Video will continue its annual James Bond showcase, typically streaming the franchise around Global Bond Day in October through Thanksgiving. MGM+ also maintains its yearly "all-Bond" programming block from October to December, while keeping select titles available year-round.

The agreement marks one of the most high-profile cross-platform licensing arrangements between two major streaming competitors in recent years.
