‘God of War’ creator criticises first look of Prime Video series
The first official image from the upcoming live-action adaptation of “God of War” has sparked a wave of criticism online, including from the creator of the original game.
Video game designer David Jaffe, who created the iconic “God of War”, did not hold back while reacting to the promotional image released by Amazon Prime Video.
In a YouTube video, Jaffe called the image “terrible” and said the character Kratos “just looks stupid.”
The image shows Kratos, played by Ryan Hurst, standing in a forest while watching his son Atreus, portrayed by Callum Vinson, practise archery. However, many fans felt the scene failed to capture the powerful tone and intensity that define the games.
Jaffe said the characters in the image looked neither interesting nor appealing, joking that it resembled a “Dumb and Dumber edition” rather than a serious adaptation.
Responding to the backlash, Hurst urged fans not to judge the series based on a single image. But Jaffe dismissed the comment, questioning why the platform released the photo if it did not properly represent the show.
The series marks the first live-action retelling of the globally popular game franchise. The story follows Kratos as he journeys with his young son Atreus to spread his wife’s ashes on the highest peak of the nine realms while navigating the dangers of Norse mythology.
The series has already received a two-season order. It is written and produced by Ronald D Moore, with production by Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, and PlayStation Productions.
