Dr Ejaz pens two books on Humayun Ahmed for Boi Mela
Dr Ejazul Islam, widely known as Dr Ejaz, has long been a familiar face to audiences. Having acted in numerous dramas and films by acclaimed writer and filmmaker Humayun Ahmed, he gained immense popularity over the years. Even now, he continues to work actively as an actor. Beyond his acting career, he is also a practising physician. However, during the ongoing Ekushey Book Fair, readers are discovering yet another side of him—that of a writer.
Dr Ejaz visits the bookfair regularly. Every day, he can be found at the Somoy Prokashon stall at Suhrawardy Udyan, signing autographs and meeting readers. The publishing house has released two of his books this year—"Humayun Sirer Chokhe Jol” and “Humayun Sirer Shooting O Ami”.
When asked about the response to the books, he said that he has been receiving warm appreciation from readers. “People are buying the books with great interest. Many are asking for autographs and taking photos as well. I’m truly enjoying the experience,” he shared.
Speaking about how it feels to attend the fair as a writer rather than solely as an actor, he said the feeling is difficult to put into words. “It’s truly different. Some emotions in life bring a special kind of joy and fulfilment, being here as a writer gives me exactly that feeling.”
Despite his busy schedule, Dr Ejaz makes time for the bookfair almost every day. “I wake up very early in the morning and travel to Gazipur, where I have my medical chamber. After seeing my patients, I go there. I cannot manage it every single day, but I try to come regularly. The pull of the fair brings me here, especially since my books have just been published.”
According to the actor-turned-author, both books are based on real-life memories from the time he spent with Humayun Ahmed. “They are drawn from many moments and experiences I shared with my beloved teacher. Through these books, readers will be able to know more about him.”
He also shared a touching response from a reader. “A woman came to the fair recently and told me she cried while reading my book. I was both surprised and happy. That kind of reaction is deeply satisfying for a writer. Many other readers have also shared how much they enjoyed the books.”
Talking about his future writing plans, Dr Ejaz revealed that he is currently working on a new novel, which he hopes to publish at next year’s book fair. “After that, I plan to take a year’s break and then write another book about Humayun Sir.”
Given his regular presence at the fair, one might wonder how he manages to shoot for his acting projects. Laughing, he replied, “I can act throughout the year, but the book fair comes only once annually. To be honest, I have already turned down three drama projects for the sake of the fair — one was a seven-day serial, and another was a one-hour drama. Offers are still coming, but for now, I’m not accepting new work because I want to be here. Besides, before coming to the fair, I still have to travel from Dhaka to Gazipur to sit in my chamber and see patients.”
While speaking with him at the Somoy Prokashon stall in Suhrawardy Udyan, Dr Ejaz was constantly pausing to sign autographs and pose for photographs with readers. It was already night when a young child approached him with a cup of tea and said shyly, “Sir, if you have a cup of tea from me, my life will feel blessed.”
Dr Ejaz immediately called the child closer and said warmly, “Give me the tea. Serve everyone tea.” The child’s joy seemed boundless. As the conversation came to an end, Dr Ejaz smiled and said, “Coming to the book fair feels wonderful — truly wonderful.”
