Fifty-five-year old Lal Miah returned home to his family in Pirojpur Sadar upazila only to find them preparing for his burial.

Miah, a resident of Banshbaria village of the upazila, had been missing for three days prior to his return, our Pirojpur correspondent reports quoting police and family.

Yesterday noon, a cleaner of Pirojpur municipality found the body of an unidentified man floating in a drain in the town and informed police.

Law enforcers recovered the body and sent it to a hospital morgue for autopsy. An unnatural death case was filed with Sadar Police Station.

Later, a youth named Sohel identified the body as that of Lal Miah who happens to be Sohel's paternal uncle.

After completion of autopsy, the family took the body home for burial which was scheduled for around 9:00pm.

The grave had already been dug by the time Lal Miah returned home yesterday evening, Sohel told our Pirojpur correspondent.

A team of Sadar Police Station rushed to the spot after Sohel informed police of the matter and they took the body back, he said.

"My uncle Lal Mia has some mental health condition. He remained missing for three days. We mistook the body for his as it exactly matched my uncle," Sohel said.

After the incident, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) tried to identify the deceased but failed, said Faruk Hossain, sub-inspector of the police station.

After collecting DNA samples, the body was buried at Pirojpur municipality graveyard as an unidentified man, added the police official.

Md Nurul Islam Badal, officer-in-charge of the station, said they are trying to identify the body.
