A new addition to Dhaka’s contemporary art landscape, Gallery MAFA has officially begun its journey with the group exhibition “A Graceful Beginning”, bringing together a vibrant collection of contemporary artworks by Bangladeshi artists.

Held at the gallery’s premises in Lalmatia, the exhibition marks the inauguration of the space founded by artist and educator Mostafizul Haque. Opened on May 8, the exhibition will continue until May 22 and remain open daily from 12:00pm to 9:00pm.

The opening ceremony was jointly inaugurated by eminent artists Hashem Khan, Rafiqun Nabi, and Monirul Islam alongside the gallery’s founder.

According to Mostafizul Haque, the first and second floors of the building have been dedicated to art learning spaces where children and young students regularly come to study and practise art.

“The main purpose of this gallery is to show young learners the paintings of senior artists,” said Mostafizul Haque. “Today, children should be shown how important art is so they become motivated to look deeper into paintings and eventually create art themselves.”

The exhibition presents a dynamic mix of artistic expressions, ranging from textured abstractions and dreamlike compositions to serene figurative works and emotionally evocative landscapes.

Rich colour palettes, complex symbolism, and experimental forms dominate the collection, reflecting both personal introspection and broader cultural narratives.

Among the notable works on display is a large-scale painting featuring a fragmented boat suspended within a surreal visual landscape. Other pieces capture fleeting human moments through soft washes of colour, bold contrasts, and tactile surfaces.

With “A Graceful Beginning”, Gallery MAFA aims to position itself as a nurturing platform for artistic dialogue, emerging talent, and contemporary visual culture in Bangladesh.
