Alamgir honoured with Meril-Prothom Alo Lifetime Achievement Award
Veteran film actor, director and producer Alamgir has been conferred the Meril-Prothom Alo Lifetime Achievement Award 2025, recognising his outstanding contribution to Bangladesh’s film industry over more than five decades.
The 27th edition of the prestigious Meril-Prothom Alo Awards celebrated the legendary artiste’s long and illustrious career, with the ceremony opening in the presence of prominent cultural figures, filmmakers and celebrities.
An Ekushey Padak-winning artiste, Alamgir is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Bangladeshi cinema. Over the years, he has earned acclaim not only as an actor but also as a filmmaker, leaving a lasting imprint on the industry.
The award was presented to him by his wife, legendary singer Runa Laila, alongside Anjan Chowdhury, managing director of Square Toiletries Limited, and Matiur Rahman, editor of Prothom Alo. The moment was met with applause from a star-studded audience.
Before the honour was handed over, actor Afzal Hossain took to the stage to pay tribute, opening his remarks with a recitation of the poem “Byabodhan”. He noted Alamgir’s nine National Film Awards and reflected on the actor’s own belief that his artistic journey is still incomplete.
A special video montage highlighting Alamgir’s contributions to cinema was also screened during the ceremony, drawing appreciation from the audience.
Receiving the award, Alamgir expressed humility, saying, “I don’t know whether I truly deserve this. My younger brother once told me that I am still not satisfied with my acting. The depth of acting is something that cannot be fulfilled in a lifetime. We can never reach the end of that pursuit. The way you have showered me with applause and honour, I will remember it forever.”
The award included a cheque of Tk 3 lakh, which the veteran actor announced he would donate to the Prothom Alo Trust Fund.
