Woman tortured for dowry in Madaripur

A case was filed yesterday against the in-laws and husband of a 21-year-old woman in connection with torturing her for dowry in Madaripur's Kalkini upazila. The victim's mother filed the case with Begum Dasar Police Station accusing the husband Nasir Mollah and seven members of his family.

On March 13, the husband and his family tried to gouge out the victim's eyes which severely damaged her eyesight, the victim's mother said.

Police rescued the 21-year-old victim from her husband's house that day following a call to the national helpline by neighbours, our correspondent reports quoting Abdul Hannan, additional superintendent of police of Madaripur.

The victim's husband and his family members have been torturing her both mentally and physically demanding Tk three lakh in dowry after her marriage a year ago, according to the case statement.

They further tortured the victim when her family refused the dowry, the victim's mother said.

The victim is currently undergoing treatment at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital.

"She still cannot see, we will come to know tomorrow if she will ever be able to see," said victim's brother Md Sabuj quoting doctors.

Police are trying to arrest the accused who went into hiding since the incident, the ASP said.
