Rajshahi accident: Bus driver arrested, sued for reckless driving

The bus driver of Hanif Enterprise was arrested in a case filed over yesterday's road accident on the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway that left 17 people dead -- 11 of whom were burnt to death after a vehicle caught fire.

The lone accused of the case -- Md Abdur Rahim (35) of Baroipara, Putia -- was arrested from Mahindra Bypass under Belpukur Police Station around 2:00 pm, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Golam Ruhul Kuddus.

Sub-inspector of Rajshahi's Katakhali Police Station -- Nur Mohammad -- filed the case with the police station against Md Abdur Rahim, who drove the Hanif Enterprise bus that collided with a Toyota HiAce.

The driver has been made accused for reckless driving, endangering human life, hurting public safety and for "culpable homicide", our Rajshahi staff correspondent reports quoting the additional deputy commissioner.

In the case statement, the plaintiff mentioned speeding and reckless driving of the Dhaka-bound Hanif Paribahan bus from Rajshahi as reasons behind the accident.

The bus rammed into the oncoming microbus, and as a result, the microbus was badly damaged and caught on fire killing its driver and all passengers.

The bodies will be handed over to their families after the autopsy at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital morgue today.
