Korail double murder: ‘If you send me with my husband, this time, he will kill me.’

"If you send me with my husband; this time, he will kill me," Hashi Begum pleaded during a mediation process involving her family members and her husband Rubel Hossain.

She refused to go with Rubel after he came to her house in the capital's Korail in the city on Monday to take her to their Cumilla home.

The mediation continued till 1:00am today but 25-year-old Hashi stuck to her decision.

She had alleged that Rubel used to torture her on a regular basis, Hashi's family members said.

All later went to bed while Rubel, a construction worker, was still arguing with his wife, sitting on a bench in the yard.

That was the last time Hashi or her three-year-old son Nirob were seen alive.

In the morning, the family members alleged that they received a call from Rubel.

"It was Rubel who killed my sister and his son…He called over the phone in the morning and said he dumped their bodies in a lake and asked us to recover those," Hashi's brother Mehedi Hasan told The Daily Star.

The family rushed to the location and saw the child's finger jutting out from the water. Hashi's hair also stuck out, their lifeless bodies floating in the water.

They recovered the bodies and discovered those were weighed down with stones and bricks before being disposed of in the lake.

They immediately called the police, but Rubel was on the run by then.

"Rubel came to our house on Monday afternoon. He behaved well, brought fruits… Had we sensed somehow… we would not give him shelter in the house," Mehedi lamented.

"My sister wanted to live, but he did not allow her," he said.

The brother said the couple got married five years back and but their relationship deteriorated two years ago.

Twenty days ago, Hashi came to their Korail house after Rubel had tortured her. A week ago Rubel took her to their Cumilla home but she returned to Korail the next day with her son, he said.

Visiting the spot, this correspondent saw Hashi's mother fainting several times after the bodies were recovered. None could console her.

Nur-E-Azam Mia, officer-in-charge of Banani Police Station, said they primarily suspected that Rubel had killed both of them. Police are trying to arrest him.

The bodies were sent to Shaheed Suhrawardi Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsies.

Morgue sources said both were strangulated to death.
