Five people were injured as local leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies clashed with police in Gazipur this afternoon.

Of the injured, Raju Ahmed Joy (28), joint convener of Gazipur Sadar unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, sustained bullet injuries on his head during the clash, said Gazipur city unit BNP president Hasan Uddin Sarker.

Hasan Uddin said a group of leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies brought out a procession in Dakhkhin Chhayabithi area around 2:45pm as part of BNP's central programme.

The clash ensued when police obstructed the procession and the agitating demonstration hurled brick chips at the law enforcers, said the BNP leader.

A chase and counter-chase took place as police charged batons on them, he said.

At that time, police opened fire leaving JCD leader injured with bullets, said Hasan Uddin, adding that four other party men were also injured in the incident.

Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station under Gazipur Metropolitan Police, said police obstructed the demonstrators and fired eight rounds of bullets from shotguns as the demonstrators threw brick chips at law enforcers.

Police later brought the situation under control, added the police official.
