Drive against catching jatka: Fisherman dies in police firing during clash in Chandpur
A man was killed when police opened fire during a clash with fishermen in Meghna river of Matlab North upazila of Chandpur.
The clash occurred around 12:15am when river police was conducting a regular drive against catching jatka.
Bullet-hit Masud Hossain (22) -- hailing from Munshiganj Kalichar -- succumbed at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, reports a correspondent from Chandpur.
Mohonpur River Police In-Charge Mohammad Hossain was also injured when the fishermen hurled brick chips targeting the law enforcers. He received primary treatment.
River police Md Kamruzzaman said while patrolling in Meghna they chased a group of fishermen, who were catching jatka in the river.
Being chased, they threw brick chips on them when police fired from shotguns in self-defence, he said.
Masud was hit by a bullet in his left thigh, Kamruzzaman added.
Police detained bullet-hit Masud and two other fishermen from the spot.
Masud was taken to Matlab North Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, Masud was sent to DMCH where he died later, the river police said.
No case was filed in this connection so far.
