Local AL leader dies days after attack by Hefajat men in Ctg

A local Awami League leader, who was attacked by supporters of Hefajat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque in Rangunia upazila of Chattogram on Saturday evening, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in the port city early today.

Deceased Md Muhibullah (54) was an executive member of Kodala union unit AL in Rangunia upazila, said Engineer Shamsul Alam Talukder, general secretary of Rangunia upazila unit AL.

"When Mamunul was confined by locals with a woman at a resort in Sonargaon of Narayanganj on Saturday evening, rumour spread in Rangunia that he was arrested by police," said Shamsul.

"Mamunul's supporters along with BNP-Jamaat men brought out a procession in Kodala union, carrying sharp weapons, after hearing the rumour that evening," he said.

"Mohibullah along with two AL activists were on road at that time," he said, adding, "Seeing them, the Hefajat men swooped on them with sharp weapons."

Later, locals rescued them and took them to the hospital in the city, he said.

Muhibullah, who was under intensive care unit (ICU) support, succumbed to his injuries around 12:30am today.   

Contacted, Mahabub Milki, officer in charge of Rangunia Police Station, said police arrested four of 64 accused in a case filed on Saturday night in connection with the attack.  

"We are conducting raids to arrest the other accused," he said.
