Search body to suggest names for EC Monday

The search committee will meet President Abdul Hamid tomorrow to suggest the next election commissioners in the path to reforming the election governing body.

The committee has so far shortlisted names of 20 individuals from around 125 names recommended by 26 registered political parties, which also held talks with the president.

The search committee will meet the president around 6:30pm on Monday, Joynal Abedin, press secretary to the president, told The Daily Star.

Before it, however, the committee will hold a meeting among themselves at the Supreme Court Judges' Lounge tomorrow to finalise 10 names as recommendations.

Later, the president will appoint the next chief and other commissioners from the list.

Besides, outgoing Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed along with other commissioners will make a courtesy call on the president around 3:00pm on Tuesday, SM Asaduzzaman, director (public relations) of the EC, said.

The timeframe of the president formed six-member search committee will expire on February 8. Besides, tenure of the incumbent Election Commission will end at the middle of this month.
