Zakat donor, 7 others on 3-day remand

A court here yesterday placed eight people, including zakat donor Mohammad Shamim and his son, on a three-day remand in a case filed following the deaths of 27 people in a stampede during distribution of zakat clothes in the town on July 10.

Judge Ahsan Habib of Cognisance Court-1 passed the order after hearing the remand prayer filed on Saturday.

Sub-inspector Musiur Rahman of Mymensingh Kotwali Police Station, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced the eight before the court yesterday during the hearing of the remand prayer.

On early Friday, 23 three women and four children got trampled to death in the town.

Witnesses said the incident occurred when over 1,000 people gathered on Atul Chakrabarty Road in the town outside the house of Mohammad Shamim, who owns a chewing tobacco brand Nurani Jarda, to collect zakat.

Religious Affairs Minister Principal Motiur Rahman visited the spot yesterday.

Meanwhile, different socio-cultural organisations demanded exemplary punishment of the people responsible for  the incident.

The three-member probe body headed by Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Shafiqul Islam started its investigation on Saturday.

Saidul Islam, sub-inspector, also in-charge of Mymensingh Police Outpost-2, was suspended on Saturday on charge of negligence of duty.
