Youth gets life for raping girl

A court here yesterday sentenced a youth to life imprisonment for raping a schoolgirl in Mirzapur upazila of the district.

The convict is Monir Hossain, 22, son of Nurul Islam of Kamarpara village in the upazila. The court also fined the convict Tk 20,000. In default, he is to suffer six months more in jail, court sources said.

According to the prosecution, Monir abducted the girl, a Class VI student of Deohata AJ High School in the upazila, while she was going to the school on October 29, 2014.

He confined the girl to a house in the area and raped her.

Victim's father later filed a case against Monir and his friend Lablu Miah with Mirzapur Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

After investigation, police pressed charges against the duo.  Judge Sharif Uddin Ahmed of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Tangail handed down the verdict.

The court acquitted Lablu as the charges brought against him could not be proved, court sources said.
