Worker hacked to death
A man was hacked to death by a local youth at Basantapur village in Kalaroa upazila of the district yesterday. The deceased, Abdul Mannan, 23, son of Ismail Hossain of Monirampur upazila in Jessore, was a worker at a shrimp enclosure owned by one Abdul Khaleque of Keshabpur upazila in Jessore. Quoting locals, police said Mannan, who used to live near the enclosure along with his wife, was sitting outside his house yesterday noon. Around 12:45pm, Saju Hossain, 27, of the same village swooped on Mannan and hacked him with a machete. He died on the spot, Officer-in-Charge Abu Saleh Md Masud Karim of Kalaroa Police Station said. Hearing screams, locals and a police team from nearby Basantapur police-outpost chased Saju and caught him after a scuffle, OC said. Sub-inspector Tanvir Hossain and two constables--Wahidul Islam and Kamalesh Sana--received minor injuries during the scuffle, the OC added.
