Woman killed: Husband, his parents held

A housewife was allegedly beaten to death for dowry in Ghoraghat upazila of Dinajpur district on Friday night. Police arrested the husband and his parents from the spot in connection with the killing.

The deceased was identified as Selina Begum, 30, wife of Montu Mia of Kalupara village in the upazila.

The arrestees are Montu Mia, 26, and his parents Israil Ahmed, 55, and Mozida Begum, 45, of the village.

Locals said Rois Uddin of Purbopara village in the upazila married off his daughter Selina to Montu Mia one and a half years ago. After their marriage Montu and his parents used to torture her for dowry.

On Friday night, the couple locked in an altercation over the dowry issue. At one stage, Montu and his parents started beating Selina as her parents did not pay the demanded dowry. Then they poured poison into her mouth.

On information, police recovered her body yesterday morning and sent it to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.

Istiaque Ahmed, inspector (Investigation) of Ghoraghat Police Station, said dowry was a reason behind the killing.
