Woman dies 4 days after suicide attempt

A woman of Zianagar upazila of the district, who attempted to commit suicide four days ago, died yesterday.

The deceased is Rahela Begum, 35, wife of Faruk Faraji of Maddho Balipara village in the upazila.

Her family members and police said Moniruzzaman Sheikh, alias Monir, son of Md Gani Sheikh of the village, raped Rahela on Saturday night with the help of one Abdur Razzak of the village. Monir is also a village doctor and organising secretary of upazila unit of Jubo League.

As Rahela's daughter witnessed the incident, Rahela tried to burn herself. Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to her house and took her to Khulna Medical College Hospital. As her husband could not afford to take her to Dhaka, as advised by the doctors, he took her back to their house on Monday.

On Tuesday, her husband filed a case with Indurkani Police station, accusing Monir and Razzak of rape.

"Husband of the deceased filed a rape case against Monir and Razzak. As the victim died, it will be added with the previous case," said Md Mizanul Haque, officer-in-charge of the police station, adding that they are trying to arrest the accused, who have gone into hiding.
