Woman beaten to death over land dispute in Panchagarh

A woman was killed and at least two others were injured in a clash over land dispute in Panchagarh's Boda upazila today.

The deceased was identified as Sufia Begum Sukhi (50) of Prodhanpara village.

Officer-in-charge of Boda Police Station Abu Sayed Chowdhury said the victim's husband Kamruzzaman, and one Toibul Alam had a long standing dispute over a piece of land.

Sufia was scattering ashes on a crop field at Kunpukhuri village in the afternoon when Toibul and his sons Harun, Latif and nephew Afjalur went there and got into an altercation with Sufia, the OC said.

Following that, they started beating her up. When she screamed, her daughter Kalpana Akhter (28) and Husband Kamruzzaman rushed there to save her.

They also beat up Kalpana and Kamruzzaman, leaving the three injured.

Later Harun, Latif and Afjalur beat up Sufia and Kalpana with iron rods when they were being taken to Boda Upazila Health Complex on a rickshaw van, the police official said.

Locals rescued the victims and brought them to the hospital in a critical state.

Sufia Begum succumbed to her injuries on way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, the OC added.

Afjalur was caught by locals and handed over to police, our Thakurgaon correspondent reports.

Police later arrested Toibul Alam, his wife Lutfa Begum and their son's wife Nargis Akhter.

Kamruzzaman filed a murder case with the police station in this connection, police said.
