Two women murdered over dowry

Two women were murdered over dowry in Jessore and Dinajpur districts last night and Monday.

In Jessore, a hospital nurse was beaten to death, allegedly by her husband, for dowry in New Town of the district town last night.

The deceased is Yesmin Mina, 23, wife of Ruhul Amin of Mallickpur village. She used to work in Akota Hospital in the town.

Rifat Hossain, Yesmin's uncle, said Ruhul Amin often used to torture Yesmin for dowry since their marriage nearly eight months ago.

Ruhul  beat up Yesmin mercilessly last night as she refused to bring Tk 15,000 from her father. Yesmin died on the spot. Ruhul fled the scene after the incident.

In Dinajpur, police arrested a man for killing his wife for dowry in Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur district on Monday afternoon.

The arrestee is Hares Mia, 32, son of Abdul Hye of Bujruk Sherpur village under the upazila.

Police, quoting locals, said Hares used to torture his wife Sharifa Begum, 20, demanding dowry. He had taken dowry several times since he got married to her 4 years ago.

On Monday afternoon, the couple had an altercation over the dowry issue. At one stage, Hares hit Sharifa on the chest, leaving her dead on the spot.

Later, Hares poured poison into her month and hanged her from the ceiling to show it as a suicide.
