Two get life for fratricide

A Sylhet court on Tuesday sentenced two siblings to life imprisonment for killing their brother in Barobandhu area under Kotwali Police Station on August 24 in 1998.

The lifers are Joynal Mia, 58, and his younger brother Anu Mia, 50, sons of Abdur Rahman of the area. The court also fined the convicts Tk 1,000 each. In default, they are to suffer two months more in jail.

 According to the prosecution, Joynal and Anu locked in an altercation with their brother Fazlu Mia on the day over the ownership of a land.

At one stage, they stabbed Fazlu, leaving him critically injured. Fazlu was taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.

Victim's another brother Shamsul Abedin filed a case with Kotwali Police Station the same day. After investigation, police submitted charge-sheet against the two.

After examining the witnesses and case record, Judge Akbar Hossain Mridha of Sylhet Metropolitan Session's Judge's Court delivered the verdict.
