Our Correspondent, Tangail

Transport workers blocked Dhaka-Tangail highway in Rabna bypass area under Sadar upazila of the district yesterday, protesting beating up of a bus driver, allegedly by some people claiming to be members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

As a result, tailbacks were created on both sides of the road, causing sufferings of passengers.

The incident took place when a pickup was trying to overtake a Dhaka-bound passenger bus from Dhanbari. As it took a few minutes to allow the pickup to pass due to the heavy traffic, some people from the pick up, claiming to be DB personnel, stopped the bus and beat up the driver Razim Miah, 30.

He was admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital.

Being informed of the incident, transport workers from Tangail bus terminal blocked the busy highway at Rabna at around 11:00pm. They also vandalised the traffic police box on the spot.

Vehicular movement came back to normal on the highway around 12:30pm as Aslam Khan, additional superintendent of police  (North) in Tangail, and the general secretary of Tangail district transport workers' union, assured the agitated workers that the culprits would be punished.

"No member of Tangail police was involved with the incident as none of them had duty with a pickup today," the ASP said, adding that they were investigating the incident.
