Trader rescued 7 days into abduction, one arrested

A maize trader, abducted from the town seven days ago, was rescued from Biral upazila of the district yesterday.

The victim is Md Rezaul Karim of Suihari area in Dinajpur town.

Rezaul told reporters that Anwar Hossain of the same area demanded money from him several weeks ago, but he refused to pay.

'A gang led by Anwar abducted me from Suihari area on Thursday afternoon for not paying the money, Rezaul said, adding that Anwar had extorted Tk 54,000 from him on December 31 last year.

Family members filed a general diary with Dinajpur Sadar Police Station on January 16.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Biral police rescued Rezaul from a forest in Kaliganj area under the upazila yesterday morning. His hands and legs were tied. He was later admitted to Biral Upazila Health Complex.

Police yesterday arrested Anwar, son of Afsar Ali, from Suihari area at noon.

They later produced Anwar before a court seeking a five-day remand. The hearing on the remand petition will be held today.

Contacte, the officer-in-charge of Biral Police Station said law enforcers have already launched a drive to arrest the rest of the gang members.
