Trader beaten for refusal to pay extortion

A gang of criminals beat up a trader and ransacked his shop at Galachipa upazila in the district on Friday evening for his refusal to pay them Tk 5,000 as extortion.

The trader was identified as Alamgir Akon, owner of Nanna Mobile Phone, of Bridge Bazar.

Locals brought Akon to Galachipa Upazila Hospital around 9:00pm where he is still undergoing treatment.

Police and locals said Hasan Mollik demanded Tk 5,000 from Alamgir as extortion about 10 days ago.

As a sequel to declining of paying toll, a gang of five led by Hasan attacked Alamgir at his shop on Friday with sticks and demanded Tk 35,000 as extortion. They also ransacked his shop.

The criminals fled after a chase by the traders of the bazar. Bazar committee President Md Sultan Khondaker said they want the law enforcers would take action against the miscreants.
