Third phase of municipality polls: 5 rebel candidates win in AL-dominated elections
As news trickles in of AL-backed candidates winning in the municipalities' mayoral elections, five rebel candidates of Awami League, who ran independently, defied the norm and won in their respective municipalities.
Aminul Islam Rabel, the incumbent mayor of Golapganj upazila and a rebel candidate of the Awami League won the Gopalganj municipality election by defeating his nearest rival, another AL-rebel candidate, by 1,323 votes.
Meanwhile, Abdul Ahad, a rebel candidate of the ruling party, won the Zakiganj municipality election by defeating his nearest competitor by 2 votes.
Elsewhere, AL-rebel candidate Sarif Uddin Prodhan won the municipality election in Pabna. He defeated AL-nominated candidate Ali Murtuza Bishwas Sony by 122 votes.
Sarif bagged 27,969 votes while Sony got 27,847 votes, Kaysar Mohammad, Pabna Sadar upazila election officer, also the assistant returning officer, confirmed to The Daily Star.
BNP nominated candidate Nur Mohammad Masum Boga got 7,504 votes.
Meanwhile in Chapainawabganj Rahanpur municipality, AL-rebel candidate Matiur Rahman Moti Khan was elected mayor after defeating his nearest rival AL-candidate by 565 votes, Motawakkil Rahman, returning officer (RO) and district election officer, confirmed to The Daily Star.
In Jhenidah's Courtchadpur municipality, AL-rebel candidate Sohiduzzaman Selim was unofficially elected as the mayor of the municipality.
He won the election defeating his rival AL-nominated candidate by 1,214 votes, Md Rokonuzzaman, district returning officer, confirmed to The Daily Star.
