Teenager gang-raped in Lalmonirhat; prime accused held

Police last night arrested the prime accused in a case filed over the gang-rape of a teenage girl in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat.

Raki Islam (26), one of the four accused rapists, was arrested from Taluk Baninagar village in the upazila last night, hours after the victim filed a rape case with Kaliganj Police Station, said Farhad Hossain, officer-in-charge of the police station, today.  

The incident happened near Kakina Railway Station in the upazila on October 6 while the 15-year-old orphan was going to the house of her maternal uncle in Kawnia of Rangpur from her aunt's house in Patgram of Lalmonirhat by train.

When the train stopped at Kakina Railway Station in the evening, the girl got off for buying food and missed the train, said the OC, quoting the victim.

Later, Raki and three others took the girl on an auto-rickshaw, promising to take her to Kawnia, and raped her at a secluded place.

Later, the girl went to Kaliganj Police Station with help of some journalists of Kaliganj Press Club and filed the rape case, our Lalmonirhat correspondent reports quoting the OC. 

The medical test of the victim was completed this noon, said OC Farhad Hossain, adding that they are trying to arrest the rest of the accused.
